"Algeria bears full responsibility in the creation and perpetuation of the regional dispute over Moroccan Sahara. The latest Security Council resolutions and the two Geneva round tables held by the UN within the framework of the political process under the auspices of the Secretary-General have confirmed Algeria's role as a stakeholder in this regional dispute," Balla said in an interview with Italian radio Sparlamento.

Algeria created, financed, armed and maintains this separatist group," the diplomat said in the interview, which focused on Algeria's role in this artificial conflict and referred to the situation in El Guerguarat, as well as the proven connections of the polisario with terrorist networks in the Sahel-Saharan region.

"Algeria bears absolute responsibility before the international community for the tragic situation of the population of the Tindouf camps, which is deprived of freedom and exploited for the personal enrichment of the polisario leaders," he said.

Algeria is also responsible, before the international community, "for the unusual fact of transferring its sovereignty prerogatives to an armed group to control the so-called refugee camps, in violation of humanitarian law", Balla added, highlighting Algeria's obstinate refusal to allow a census of this population.

"Algeria spends so many resources, so much energy and so many skills in its obsessive hostile action against Morocco, instead of investing this effort in much-needed internal and regional development actions," he noted.

Regarding the situation in the buffer zone of El Guerguarat, Balla explained that the armed militias of the polisario, supported by Algeria, had entered Moroccan territory, and precisely in the buffer zone that Morocco has placed under the responsibility of the UN to ensure the ceasefire under the 1991 agreement.

"The separatists, who used civilians as human shields, committed acts of banditry and blocked the flow of people and goods between Morocco and Mauritania, and intimidated Minurso military observers, the pointed out.

With this dangerous escalation provoked by polisario militias in the  El Guerguarat crossing, Morocco, in full harmony with the UN and its Secretary-General, was forced to intervene by exercising its right in an area of national sovereignty in the Moroccan Sahara, Balla said.

This peaceful action of the Royal Armed Forces, which ended without any contact with civilians, allowed the return to normality and the resumption of civil and commercial traffic with Mauritania, he added.

The ambassador also underlined Polisario's links with terrorism and organized crime. These links have been decried in various intelligence reports from foreign countries and by strategic and security research centers.

According to Balla, "countries such as Spain and the United States have warned against the jihadist drift of the polisario and the fact that the Tindouf camps are becoming a hotbed for the recruitment of jihadists. They also voiced concern about the impact of this situation on security in the Mediterranean region."
