  • Culture : Exhibition 'Around the columns of Hercules' in Madrid: Message of Friendship and Rapprochement - Spanish Minister of Culture

"The exhibition is a message of friendship, proximity and good neighborliness. History and geography have resulted in Morocco and Spain being two countries condemned to get along," Iceta told the press on the sidelines of the opening of this exhibition which was attended by several Moroccan and Spanish figures.

This event is a "new demonstration of the dynamics of relations between the two countries under the new bilateral roadmap," he said, stressing that Morocco and Spain are two "friends and neighbors."

The organization of this exhibition, initiated under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, also demonstrates the "willingness" of the two countries to continue to work together and carry out other joint projects, Iceta noted.

"With this exhibition, we want to celebrate the friendship and shared history of Spain and Morocco," said Angeles Moreno Bau, Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs, in similar remarks.

"Through this exhibition, the Spanish visitors will have the opportunity to get to know unique objects and cultural goods that have never been exhibited outside Morocco," he added. This event "also allows us to celebrate the new page opened between the two countries," Moreno Bau went on to say.

Morocco's ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich described the opening of this exhibition as a "historic moment" in cultural cooperation between the two countries. This event will pay tribute to a thousand-year-old history that forged over centuries, she added.

According to the Moroccan diplomat, the exhibition is one of the first achievements of the roadmap established by the two countries following April's visit to Morocco of the President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, at the invitation of HM King Mohammed VI.

  • Social : Hotline Dedicated to Denouncing Acts of Corruption Received 67,000 Calls Until mid-May (Minister)

This line, created by the Presidency of the Public Prosecutor's Office and launched on May 14, 2018, has received, until May 14, 67,000 calls, an average of 100 calls per day, stressed Mezzour in response to an oral question submitted by the group of the Moroccan Employers' Association (CGEM) in the House of Advisors on "the outcome of the National Strategy for Combating Corruption."

She noted that the anti-corruption hotline has resulted, three years after its launch, in 217 arrests of suspects red-handed, at a rate of two cases per week, including employees of the public and private sector in all regions of the Kingdom.

The Minister said that the government program has placed the fight against corruption at the center of priorities to strengthen trust between the user and the administration, noting that the national strategy against corruption has been updated, allowing the convergence and progressive achievement of its objectives.

This strategy, she noted, aims to sustainably curb the curve of corruption, strengthen the confidence of citizens, improve the business climate and the international positioning of Morocco and achieve 30 procedural goals through the implementation of 203 projects in three phases extending from 2016 to 2025.

  • Culture : 27th Edition of SIEL Celebrates African Literature

This major event of the Moroccan cultural and literary scene, which opens its doors to the public from June 3 to 12, celebrates African literature in recognition of the designation of Rabat as the capital of African culture.

"African literature has demonstrated its ability to excel in this area, winning several international awards and standing out in universities and international centers of study and research," according to the website set up for this new edition of SIEL.

Affected by an "unfair veil", African literature has not yet enjoyed, as deserved, a wide spread in its African environment, whether through the dissemination and translation of literary and scientific texts or through cultural activities.

The same source added that the spirit of African integration is present in the cultural program of this edition, since "the pavilion of honor will see the presence of 16 publishing houses from different African countries to exhibit and make known to the public their editorial production".

  • Social : Experience of Mourchidates in Morocco Highlighted at Regional Forum in Nouakchott

During this meeting organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Africa Office), Fatima Zahra Al-Salihi, Mourchida of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, emphasized the many reforms that occurred in the religious field in Morocco, as part of the comprehensive civilizational reform project launched by the Kingdom under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

In a speech entitled "Murchidates and prevention of violent extremism: lessons from the Moroccan experience," Al-Salihi explained that the reformist vision of the religious field in Morocco draws its strength from a comprehensive approach and a long-term vision to meet the needs and priorities of society.

The religious field, she explained, has experienced comprehensive revival and development under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, recalling the special interest given to this field through the involvement of women and the expansion of the scope of their work in the management of religious affairs and the fight against extremism and fundamentalism.

The training of the Mourchidates, Al-Salihi said, is part of a comprehensive and general strategic vision related to the policy of reform and management of religious affairs in the Kingdom. It is also part of an integrated royal vision revolving around the role of these Mourchidates in the consolidation of the values of citizenship and the improvement of the living conditions of Moroccans, she added.

  • Social : Morocco Enforces Commitment to Combat All Forms of Violence against Women, Minister Says

Speaking by videoconference at a high-level ministerial session part of the Conference to launch the Regional Index on Violence against Women and Girls (May 21-22) Hayar emphasized Morocco's "early" involvement in the field of gender equality, women's rights and fighting all forms of violence and discrimination.

The minister highlighted the foresight of HM King Mohammed VI who constantly emphasizes the requirement to strengthen the role of women and their integration in the process of sustainable development.

As a result, Morocco has strengthened its legal arsenal, updated its public policies on equality and gender mainstreaming, and created mechanisms to support women victims of violence, Hayar added.

"In application of the High Royal Directions, the Kingdom also launched the 2020 Marrakech Declaration to end violence against women under the presidency of HRH Princess Lalla Meryem," she recalled, adding that the initiative was praised and recognized by the United Nations and has instilled a new dynamic in the prevention, protection and care of women victims of violence.

Hayar also recalled the accession of Morocco last February to the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women that will enter into force in July 2022, and to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

During this conference, held by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in partnership with Jordan's Ministerial Committee for the Empowerment of Women, Morocco's experience in assisting women victims of violence was praised, together with the Kingdom's legislative achievements.

The conference brought together several women ministers as well as gender experts and representatives of relevant ministries, the European Union, the UfM, and the civil society.

The event was marked by the launch of the Regional Index on Violence against Women and Girls, as part of the regional program "Combating violence against women and girls in the southern Mediterranean" funded by the EU.

HM the King Delivers Speech to Nation on 44th Anniversary of Green March

06 November 2019 Printable Version
Rabat - HM King Mohammed VI delivered, on Wednesday, a speech to the Nation on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the Green March.

Here follows the full text of the Royal speech:

"Dear Citizens,

The Green March has always been the best illustration of the effective cohesion between the Throne and the people.

It is testimony to the ability of Moroccans - the King and the people - to rise to the challenges facing the nation.

This is a never-ending march. Indeed, the spirit which enabled us to recover the Sahara in 1975 is the same one which urges us today to achieve development in all the regions of the Kingdom.

This naturally includes our southern provinces, which constitute a link between Morocco and the rest of Africa from the geographical, human and economic perspectives.

Dear Citizens,

Morocco has always been clear in its position concerning the Moroccanness of the Sahara as much as in its firm belief in the justness of its cause and the legitimacy of its rights.

It will continue to work honestly and in good faith to achieve a political, realistic, practical and consensual solution based exclusively on the political approach adopted by the United Nations Organization and the relevant Security Council resolutions.

The Autonomy Initiative provides for that solution, given that it is not only serious and credible, but also rooted in sound principles. It is the only way forward towards a settlement guaranteeing full respect for the Kingdom's national unity and territorial integrity.

This tendency has been reinforced by the growing number of States - now more than 163 - which do not recognize the fictitious entity.

It is also confirmed by the partnerships and agreements which have been signed by Morocco with the influential powers as well as with many countries and sister nations, and which concern all the Kingdom’s regions, including the Saharan provinces.

Dear Citizens,

The Green March enabled Morocco to recover its southern provinces.

As a result, the map of the Kingdom has changed. It is perhaps hard to believe that Rabat is, in fact, located in the country’s far north, and that Agadir is the center of the country.

Indeed, the distance between Agadir and Tangier is roughly the same as that between Agadir and the Saharan provinces.

With that in mind, it is not reasonable that some basic infrastructure should end at Marrakech, whereas the Souss-Massa region is actually the center of Morocco and has enormous potential.

For this reason, I invite the authorities concerned to give serious thought to the development of a rail link between Marrakech and Agadir, as a first step before extending it to the rest of the southern regions. We should also expand the road network, which I am seeking to further develop through the construction of the Agadir-Dakhla highway.

The railway line will contribute to opening up the regions concerned, in addition to stimulating development and economic prosperity, especially with regard to the transport of people and goods and the promotion of exports, tourism and other economic activities.

It will also create many job opportunities, not just in Souss-Massa, but in all surrounding regions, too.

The Souss-Massa region must become an economic hub linking Morocco’s north to its south – from Tangier, in the north, to Oujda, in the east, to our southern provinces, in the south.

This should be achieved within the framework of advanced regionalization and the equitable distribution of wealth between all regions.

The country I would like to see should comprise harmonious, integrated regions that benefit, on an equal footing, from infrastructure and major projects that should be profitable to all.

Regional development should be based on cooperation and complementarity between regions. Each region should have a major economic hub developed around its potential and specificities.

Moreover, sectoral policies should be implemented at the regional level.

It should be emphasized, in this regard, that the new momentum which has been created with respect to state institutions, the government and the civil service, should be extended to regions as well.

Dear Citizens,

My keenness to achieve fair, balanced development in all the Kingdom’s regions is just as strong as my commitment to establishing sound, solid relations with sister Maghreb countries.

The current situation in the region and in the Mediterranean basin makes demands on us all. It requires positive action, given the opportunities and the challenges involved.

• Young people in the Maghreb want us to provide an open space conducive to communication and exchange;

• The corporate sector expects us to bring about conditions to boost development;

• Our partners, especially in Europe, need an effective partner;

• Our fellow brothers and sisters in sub-Saharan Africa await our countries’ contribution to major programs on the continent and to tackling Africa’s main challenges;

• And our Arab brothers look forward to seeing the Great Maghreb contribute to forging a new Arab order.

Hopes, just like expectations, are running high; and the challenges are many and complex. Regrettably, some are not taking the situation seriously.

As a matter of fact, we have one and the same enemy, namely inaction and limited development, which are having an adverse impact on the peoples of our five countries.

Dear Citizens,

The Moroccan Sahara is our country’s gateway to sub-Saharan Africa.

Ever since I ascended the throne, I have put Africa at the heart of Morocco’s foreign policy. Therefore, I have paid visits to numerous African countries, and close to 1,000 agreements have been signed, covering all areas of cooperation.

This has had a tangible impact on Morocco's economic, political, cultural and religious standing on the continent.

I firmly intend to make Morocco a key player in shaping the Africa of the future.

Moreover, our ambition is to increase the volume of trade with other African countries, to boost Morocco’s investments in the continent and to launch a new phase based on mutual benefit.

The achievement of these goals hinges on the fulfilment of Morocco’s commitments as well as on expanding our presence in Africa.

Dear Citizens,

Ours is a collective responsibility to safeguard our national unity and territorial integrity, and to promote comprehensive development throughout Morocco.

At the same time, it is our responsibility to strengthen the humanitarian, economic and political relations binding Morocco to other African countries.

We would thus reiterate our commitment to the Oath of the Green March, honor the memory of its architect, my revered father, His Majesty King Hassan II - may he rest in peace - and pay tribute to all the worthy Moroccans who made sacrifices so that Morocco may enjoy freedom and progress, in an environment where unity, security and stability prevail.

Wassalamu alaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh."
