It was on the 10th day of Ramadan, 1380 hegira (Feb. 26, 1961), that the late sovereign, hero of national liberation, passed away only few years after the Kingdom gained its independence following a fierce fight against colonialism.
The Commemoration of this event is a recognition and a tribute to a King who, supported by his companion, the late HM Hassan II, sacrificed himself for his people's freedom and dignity, and who preferred exile to dishonor, categorically refusing to give up national sovereignty or any other bargaining with the protectorate authorities.
The late King HM Hassan II carried on the struggle to consolidate the gains accomplished by the Father of the Nation, by embarking on a wide-scale program of economic and social development.
Endeavoring to deepen and build on this objective is the mission of HM King Mohammed VI who is ushering Morocco in a new era of modernity, development and prosperity.
