"Burkina Faso reaffirms its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, about which the Security Council welcomed the serious and credible efforts of Morocco to resolve the dispute", deeming it a credible and realistic solution to settle this regional dispute, said the Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso to the UN, Ambassador Eric Tiare.
"On the socio-economic level, Burkina Faso lauds the investments made in favor of the populations of the Sahara and welcomes the efforts and achievements as part of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic", underlined the ambassador.
Tiare also expressed Burkina Faso's support for the ongoing political process "conducted under the exclusive aegis of the United Nations Secretary-General and which aims to achieve a mutually acceptable and negotiated political solution to the regional dispute, based on realism and a spirit of compromise".
Burkina Faso welcomes the notable progress made during the two round tables held in Geneva and bringing together Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and the Polisario, and asks the next UNSG Personal Envoy and successor of Köhler to resume the negotiations where they were left off during the upcoming third round table, said the ambassador.
Burkina Faso lauds the Security Council's call on the four stakeholders to remain engaged throughout the duration of the process to ensure its success, he concluded.
