Morocco is represented at the conference, held through video-conference, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita.
Participants at the meeting will review, over two days, the progress made in the implementation of the Global Compact since its adoption in 2018 as the first government-to-government negotiated pact on international migration in all its dimensions.
The event is held under the auspices of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Arab League, in cooperation with the United Nations Network on Migration in the Arab Region.
Speaking on this occasion, the Executive Secretary of ESCWA, Rola Dashti, called for joint action for the integration of migrants in certain social policies to reduce hatred and discrimination against them and ensure safe, orderly and regular migration.
For his part, IOM Director General Antonio Vitorino, said the regional reviews provide an opportunity to assess and strengthen regional cooperation on migration, and to highlight the adaptability of the Global Compact to strengthen collective efforts to protect the vulnerable and promote the positive effects of human mobility.
For his part, the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, noted that the contribution of migrants must be achieved in any society by reaching an appropriate balance between all economic, social and political considerations.
During this event, government representatives from the Arab region will share the main findings of the voluntary national reports on the Global Compact for Migration. They will also highlight their experiences, challenges, as well as good practices and lessons learned.
The conference will also review the 23 objectives of the agreement, through four round-table meetings and address specific themes as well as interactive discussions among all participants. The event will result in a series of recommendations.
