"The embassy is following very closely developments in the areas affected by the two natural disasters and remains mobilized to ensure the safety of members of the Moroccan community, in coordination with the Japanese authorities," the embassy said in a statement.

A powerful earthquake rocked Hokkaido in the early hours on Thursday, triggering landslides, destroying roads and buildings and left the northern island's 5.3 million residents without power.

The 6.7-magnitude quake struck at 3:09 a.m. local time at a depth of 40 kilometers.

This is the second major natural disaster to strike Japan in days. At least 11 people have been killed and about 600 injured as Typhoon Jebi ripped through the country, the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years.
