Only three other MENA countries, namely the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain are in the same category as Morocco. For the said category 1, the State Department advises American travellers to "take the usual precautions" while visiting these countries.

This new system, which was unveiled on Thursday, includes three other categories, namely category 2, which calls for greater caution, category 3 "Reconsidering the travel" and Category 4 "Do not travel".

In addition, the system provides additional guidance for some countries by listing the areas to be avoided because of the risk of violence or the threat of terrorism.
