Head of Govt., Russian PM Chair Broad Working Meeting

Rabat  -
Head of government Saâd Eddine El Othmani and Russian prime minister Dmitri Medvedev chaired, on Wednesday in Rabat, a working meeting broadened to include Moroccan and Russian top officials and cabinet members.

During this meeting, the two parties examined means to reinforce the strategic partnership uniting Morocco and Russia, in the light of the dynamic triggered by the visits of HM King Mohammed VI to Russia in 2002 and 2016, and that of Russian president Vladimir Poutine to Morocco in 2006.

The talks focused on prospects for developing bilateral cooperation in key sectors as energy, industry, and agriculture, in addition to means to reinforce customs, cultural, military and security cooperation and to boost bilateral trade.

On this occasion, 11 agreements of bilateral partnership were inked, a fact that would strengthen the legal arsenal governing the Moroccan-Russian strategic partnership, which already boasts 16 agreements that were signed in March 2016 during HM the King's visit to the country.

The said agreements touch on bolstering customs, agricultural, military, diplomatic, administrative, commercial and cultural cooperation and also cover energy efficiency, renewable energy and nuclear energy peaceful use.

Trade volume between Morocco and Russia soared from 200 million dollars in 2001 to 2.5 billion dollars in 2016, which makes Russia the Kingdom's 9th supplier and 22nd client.

The Russian prime minister arrived Tuesday evening in Rabat for a two-day working and friendship visit to the Kingdom, along with an important delegation.
