"This is an exceptional, rich and multidimensional partnership that will develop even more," he told the representatives of the press accredited in Brussels.

Recalling that the two parties will celebrate in 2019 the 50th anniversary of their first free trade agreement, Chami stressed that trade has always remained of great importance in Moroccan-European economic relations.

The volume of trade between Morocco and the EU is estimated at 35 billion Euros, including 21 billion Moroccan imports from Europe and 14 billion exports to the Old Continent, he said.

Beyond the commercial aspect, the Morocco-EU partnership is strengthened by various agreements concerning, among others, fisheries, air transport, the settlement of commercial disputes, while other agreements are being negotiated, Chami underlined.

He cited in particular the deep and comprehensive free trade agreement, which should allow service companies to operate freely in Morocco and Europe.

Other aspects concern the protection of geographical indications, police cooperation with Europol, migration, crisis management in the Mediterranean, etc.

The two sides are also cooperating on issues of security and the fight against terrorism and extremism, said Chami, who stressed in this regard the importance of the Moroccan program for the training of imams which benefits several African and European countries.

Another example of the "successful" partnership between Morocco and the EU is the European Neighborhood Policy.

"Morocco is seen by Europeans as a 'success story' of their neighborhood policy," he said, noting that Morocco, as a beneficiary of this policy, has managed to speed up its reforms (justice, access to healthcare, competitiveness of companies ...), "an effort commended by the EU".

Commenting on Tuesday's ruling by the European Court of Justice on the EU-Morocco fisheries agreement, Chami recalled that both sides had taken note of the ruling and noted that the spirit of close and sincere cooperation that had guided the process of adapting the agricultural agreement had created a valuable level of trust for deepening the partnership.

Asked about the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, the ambassador reiterated that the Sahara issue falls within the exclusive competence of the United Nations, while emphasizing the relevance of Morocco's proposal for autonomy, which the Security Council described as serious and credible.

"We will continue to support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy to find a solution to this question that has lasted too long and continues to prevent Maghreb integration," he said, recalling that the World Bank had already warned against the cost of the non-Maghreb for the economies of the region.
