Gaza Central Desalination Plant: Morocco Ready to Provide Technical Support (Ambassador)

Brussels  -
Morocco is ready to provide technical support to Gaza’s desalination project, Morocco’s Ambassador to the EU Council and the European Commission, Ahmed Reda Chami, said Tuesday in Brussels.

The diplomat, who represented Morocco at the pledging conference on the Gaza Central Desalination Plant & Associated Works Project in Brussels, stressed that "Morocco undertakes to provide technical support in the framework of this major project and will spare no effort to fully support this initiative".

Morocco welcomes this initiative which will show international solidarity with the aim of improving the living conditions of the Palestinian population in Gaza at a time when more than 2 million Palestinians in Gaza rely almost exclusively on the coastal aquifer as a source of drinking water, he said.

He added that only 3% of the water pumped from the aquifer complies with World Health Organisation drinking water quality standards.

The conference, the ambassador added, was also an opportunity to commend the action of the Union for the Mediterranean that supported this great project as well as efforts made by its former Secretary General, Fathallah Sijilmassi, the Moroccan diplomat said.

The conference, co-chaired by the EU and the Palestinian Authority, mobilised financial support of €456 million to this biggest ever infrastructure project in the Gaza strip, which will provide a minimum of 55 million m3 of safe and clean drinking water per year to the people in dire need.
