  • Economy : Energy: Morocco 'Ideally' Positioned to Seize Opportunities Offered by Israel (ONHYM Head)

"Morocco, with its sustainable development dynamics, its significant potential in renewable energies, its proximity to European markets, the spirit of innovation and the ambitious climate policy driven by HM King Mohammed VI, is ideally positioned to seize the opportunities offered and to build win-win partnerships, particularly with Israel," Benkhadra pointed out at the "Morocco-Israel: Connect to Innovate" Forum.

In this regard, she stressed that Morocco, a country with low emissions but vulnerable to the effects of climate change, took its responsibilities very early by gradually preparing its vision to address the problems of energy security, water scarcity, desertification, flooding and sea level rise.

Morocco, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is committed to sustainable global development both at the economic and social levels, said Benkhadra, adding that this commitment reflects the particular attention that the Sovereign pays to sustainable development and the preservation of the environment.

The Kingdom has considerable assets to achieve energy transition and in particular renewable energies and hydrogen where the country can position itself as a precursor, in addition to positioning itself as a regional production and export platform, at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, she added.

"The kingdom aims to become in the coming years, based on the choices it has made, the "most competitive" industrial base in the world and among the 5 most innovative ones, as well as a carbon-free reference industrial base in the region, given that the country has one of the greatest potentials in renewable energies," the ONHYM chief underlined.

For his part, Yosef Abramowitz, president and CEO of Energiya Global Capital, underlined that Morocco and Israel have the potential in the sectors of energy and sustainable development for stronger collaboration and cooperation.

He also shed light on the huge opportunities for collaboration between the two countries which face the same energy challenges.

This Forum, organized by Start-Up Nation Central, is intended to be a unique event bringing together Moroccan and Israeli leaders, from the private and public sectors, to discuss the theme of technological innovation in the sectors of agri-food, water, logistics, energy and sustainable development.

This event hosts a series of workshops, business sessions, B2B meetings and networking meetings.

Start-up Nation Central, which is a non-profit organization, aims to promote Israel's innovation ecosystem to the world.

  • World : South-South Cooperation, Factor of African Economic Integration - Moroccan Diplomat

"Our continent must develop a vision, interact and engage not only with its partners but also within Africa, through South-South cooperation, to make significant progress in achieving its economic integration," he said at a roundtable marking Africa Day (May 25).

The entry into force of the Continental Free Trade Agreement is a major achievement that will serve this purpose, he stated at the event held by the Moroccan Embassy in Kenya in partnership with the Pan African Congress - Kenya Chapter.

African economic integration, as stipulated in Agenda 2063, will also help overcome the challenge of food insecurity, Laassel said, adding that the best way to celebrate Africa Day is to engage in continental thinking for Africa's economic liberation.

The roundtable, which was attended by government officials, elected officials, diplomats and members of the civil society, discussed the challenges facing the African continent, particularly food insecurity.

Participants in the roundtable stressed the role of the African Union in preserving stability, calling for urgent solutions to food insecurity and famine.

The issue of education was also at the heart of the debates, the panelists being convinced that the solution for a prosperous and integrated Africa lies in the future generations.

Speaking during a panel on "New energy economy" at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Padmanathan highlighted the achievements and progress made by Morocco in solar and wind energy.

He also praised the assets as well as the favorable climate for investment in this field in Morocco.

The panel, moderated by British journalist Martin Wolf, was an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the transition of electricity generation dominated by fossil fuels to clean and green modes.

  • Regional : Launch in Tangier of 2022 Strait Search-and-Rescue Exercise

Organized by the Department of Fisheries, jointly with the Royal Navy, the Royal Gendarmerie, the Royal Air Force (FRA) and Civil Protection, this exercise will take place off the port of Tangier Med. It consists of a life-size rescue operation, featuring a struggling passenger ship requiring the emergency evacuation of 50 people, including many injured.

This exercise that will take place on Thursday, aims to improve the level of coordination between the various stakeholders for efficient use of sea, air and land capabilities and offers a new opportunity to train crews of the sea and air rescue units.

To this end, the organizers will deploy their means of intervention to test their ability to save people in trouble at sea and quickly provide them with medical care and administrative support, once transported to port.

The drill is also an opportunity for all partners to implement the procedures for conducting and managing complex search and rescue operations enacted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

"This exercise meets our constant concern to improve the skills of the coordinators and rescuers for the management of a major sea event," said Ahmed El Kohen from the Department of Fisheries in remarks during a national seminar on air and sea rescue in Morocco, held on the sidelines of this exercise.

The various exercises organized in the past have helped strengthen the national search and rescue service, he went on, adding that in 2021, 843 sailors and 12,449 candidates for illegal migration were rescued.

Surinamese FM praised the pioneering role of HM King Mohammed VI in promoting South-South cooperation and solidarity between countries, especially in Africa and the Caribbean.

  • World : Morocco Elevated Cooperation with African Countries to True Action and Solidarity Partnership - Moroccan Diplomat

The Kingdom is also committed to strengthening its cultural, political and economic relations with African countries, stated the Moroccan diplomat who spoke at a ceremony held at the University of Addis Ababa to mark Africa Day.

Alaoui M'Hammdi highlighted the "Casablanca Group", which was established in the early 1960's bringing together states with a shared vision of the future of Africa and of pan-Africanism.

The pioneering African leaders believed that a strong integration could enable Africa to free itself from colonialism, establish peace, promote intercultural dialogue, increase the geopolitical influence of the continent and initiate its economic development, she said.

In January 1961, Casablanca hosted the African heads of state who adopted the Casablanca Charter, a prelude to the creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) two years later, the Moroccan diplomat recalled.

Alaoui M'Hammdi also highlighted the return of Morocco to the African Union in 2017 under the visionary leadership of HM King Mohammed VI. Morocco had always worked for a specific and renewed partnership within the framework of bilateral, sub-regional, regional, inter-regional and multilateral cooperation within the African continent, she said.

The diplomat added that Morocco, a key player for a prosperous, successful and strong Africa, is strongly committed to South-South cooperation and plays a leading role in promoting and strengthening cooperation ties between countries of the South.

Thanks to an ambitious and forward-looking royal vision, Morocco has multiplied initiatives and actions to promote cooperation, especially with its African partners, raising it to the level of a true partnership for development, Alaoui M'Hammdi went on to say.

In that regard, she recalled the numerous visits of HM King Mohammed VI to Africa, which created a new momentum in relations with many African countries and gave a strong impetus to South-South cooperation to contribute to the establishment of peace, security and stability in these countries.

Several diplomats accredited in Addis Ababa, officials of the United Nations and the African Union, artists and other figures took part in this ceremony to celebrate Africa Day.

  • World : Africa Day: 'In Unity and Solidarity, We Build the Continent We Want' - Ambassador

In the face of numerous challenges, African countries are called upon to step up their efforts to overcome obstacles and constraints to the development of a people-centered Africa which relies on its people and cares about the welfare of its children, Sbihi said at an event marking Africa Day, held at the initiative of the Group of African Ambassadors in Gabon.

This year's theme (Building resilience in food and nutrition security on the African Continent: Strengthening Agri-food systems and health and social production systems to accelerate socio-economic and human capital development) attests to the critical importance for Africa to ensure its food security and eradicate famine and malnutrition once and for all, he added.

In his opinion, the road to integration and development is extremely important and "Africa can be proud of its place in the world and the level of development it has achieved, thanks to the hard work of its worthy children."

"This is the outcome of the spirit of solidarity and cooperation between African countries. It is also the result of the laborious cooperation between Africa and its various partners in other continents," the Moroccan diplomat added.

For his part, Gabon's Minister of Agriculture and Food, Charles Mve Ella, noted that this day "challenges us to build resilience in food security on the Continent."

"Africa Day is an opportunity that requires, once again, our joint efforts to give Africa more means in terms of quantitative and qualitative production," he said.

  • Politics : Embassy of Suriname Inaugurated in Rabat

On this occasion, Ramdin said that the opening of the Embassy and the upcoming opening of a Consulate General in the city of Dakhla on Thursday, will further strengthen relations between the two countries and raise them to a higher level.

These relations are based on respect for the sovereignty of Morocco over its Sahara and commitment to democracy and the promotion of human rights, among others, he said.

For his part, Bourita said that the opening of the Embassy of Suriname in Morocco is part of the momentum of relations between the two countries over the past seven years.

The position of Suriname in favor of the national cause has paved the way for developing bilateral relations, thus allowing to establish mechanisms to continue the implementation of the bilateral cooperation roadmap and achieve the agreed upon projects, the minister added.

Rabat is now an important diplomatic platform at the regional and international levels thanks to the confidence that the Kingdom inspires as a partner and which makes it a diplomatic center experiencing a real dynamic, in line with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Bourita said.

Morocco and Suriname expressed on Wednesday their great appreciation of the present level of bilateral relations in all areas, in a joint statement issued following talks between Nasser Bourita and Albert Ramdin.

During these talks, the two ministers discussed a broad range of issues relating to the status and prospects for expanding cooperation between Morocco and Suriname to match the respective aspirations and ambitions of both countries.

HM the King Delivers a Speech to the Nation on Throne Day

31 July 2021 Printable Version
Fez - HM King Mohammed VI on Saturday delivered a speech to the Nation on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the Sovereign's accession to the throne of his glorious ancestors.

Here follows the full text of the royal speech:

"Praise be to God,

May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet, His Kith and Kin

Dear Citizens,

The twenty-second anniversary of my enthronement, which we are proudly celebrating today, is more than just a commemoration of my accession to throne.

This celebration illustrates the bonds of the sacred Bei’a, or pledge of allegiance, as well as the solid cohesion that has always existed between the Sultans and Kings of Morocco and the Moroccan people, regardless of the circumstances.

Morocco is a State steeped in history - a united nation with roots deeply anchored in its past.

Our country draws its strength from its national unity and from the unanimous stance of all its components on the nation’s sacred values.

The strength of the Moroccan nation also stems from its institutions, from the energy and skills of its citizens, and from the Moroccan people’s work and endeavors to achieve the country’s development and progress, and to defend its unity and stability.

It is precisely this ever-vibrant human and cultural capital that has enabled our country to rise to challenges and to overcome difficulties and hardships throughout its long history, ancient as well as modern.

Dear Citizens,

I should like, first of all, to reiterate my thanks to the entire staff working in the health sector - in the public, private and military sectors - and to the security forces and public authorities for the dedication and keen spirit of responsibility they have shown in confronting the Covid-19 pandemic.

This has been a difficult situation for all of us, for me and my family, as for all citizens. Indeed, when I see Moroccans suffer, I, too, feel their pain and experience the same feelings.

Although the epidemic has adversely impacted the country’s economic projects and activities and has affected the material and social conditions of many citizens, I have sought to come up with solutions to reduce the effects of the crisis.

As soon as the epidemic started, I took the initiative of setting up a special fund to mitigate the effects of the crisis - an initiative which was spontaneously embraced by the citizens.

I also launched an ambitious plan to boost the economy by providing support to the small and medium-sized enterprises affected by the crisis, and to preserve jobs as well as the purchasing power of households through direct material assistance.

I also created the Mohammed VI Investment Fund to promote productive activities, and also to accompany and finance various investment projects.

Dear Citizens,

We have every right, today, to celebrate Morocco’s achievements in the "battle for vaccines" - which is far from being an easy one - as well as the successful roll-out of the national vaccination campaign and the citizens’ massive engagement in it.

Since I believe medical autonomy to be a key element in the accomplishment of the country’s strategic security, I have launched a pilot project for the manufacturing, in Morocco, of vaccines, medicines and the necessary medical materials.

Still, we must keep in mind that the epidemic is not over yet, and that the crisis is continuing. Everyone should continue to be vigilant and comply with the instructions issued by the public authorities in this regard.

Dear Citizens,

Thanks to a collective national endeavor, there are positive indicators which show that our economy is on its way to a full recovery.

By the grace of the Almighty, the situation has been further improved by the good crop year with which God has blessed us. The agricultural output will promote a sense of contentment and tranquility among the citizens.

This development comes in a promising context, now that the Special Commission for the Development Model has submitted its proposals. The latter will make it possible to embark on a new phase, the aim being to accelerate the country’s economic take-off and shore up the social project we want for our country.

The Commission’s work was a patriotic, constructive and commendable effort. Participating in it were the nation’s driving forces, including political parties, economic and social stakeholders, trade unions, civil society organizations and a number of citizens.

As was the case with the preparation of the development model, I consider its implementation to be a national duty that requires the participation of all stakeholders, especially those that will be in charge of government and public policy in the years to come.

I hope the "National Pact for Development" will serve as a frame of reference that includes development principles and priorities as well as an economic and social contract that paves the way for a new revolution of the King and the people.

As the custodian of the nation’s interests and of those of the citizens, I shall make sure to follow up the actual implementation of the development model through the necessary measures and mechanisms.

Dear Citizens,

In addition to the development initiatives launched at the domestic level, Morocco is keen to keep up its earnest efforts to promote security and stability at the African and the Euro-Mediterranean levels, and especially in the neighboring Maghreb region.

In keeping with that policy, I reiterate my sincere call to our brothers in Algeria for us to work together, without conditions, for the development of bilateral relations based on trust, dialogue and good neighborliness.

I am not satisfied with the current state of our relations, for it does not serve our peoples’ interests, nor is it acceptable to a great many countries.

It is my firm belief that an open border between two neighboring countries and two brotherly peoples is the norm.

The closing of borders is incompatible with a natural right and an intrinsic legal principle, both of which are enshrined in international covenants, including the Marrakech Treaty, which is the founding text of the Arab Maghreb Union. That Treaty stipulates the free movement of persons, goods, services and capital between the States of the Union.

Since 2008, I have been saying this frankly, stressing it many times and on various occasions.

This is because neither the current Algerian president, nor even his predecessor, nor I, are responsible for the decision made to close the border.

However, we are politically and morally responsible for its continuation – we are responsible before God, before history and before our citizens.

There is no sensible justification for the current situation, the more so as the reasons that led to the closing of the border apply no more. This means there is no reasonable justification for the closure.

I do not wish to blame or lecture anyone. In fact, we are brothers, who have been separated by an intruding entity, which should not be allowed to come between us.

As for what some say, namely that opening the borders will only bring evil and problems to Algeria or to Morocco, this is simply not true. No one can believe such claims, especially in this age of communication and modern technology.

The closing of the border does not stop communication between the two peoples; rather, it only contributes to the closure of minds, which are swayed by the false stories spread by some media outlets, namely that Moroccans are afflicted by poverty and that they live on smuggling and drugs.

In fact, anyone can check for himself or herself that these allegations are simply not true. There is an Algerian community living in our country, and Algerians from Europe and also from inside Algeria who visit Morocco, who can vouch for this.

To our brothers in Algeria, I say this: Morocco will never cause you any evil or problems. Nor will my country put you in peril or under threat. That is because what affects you affects us, and what befalls you harms us.

Therefore, I believe that the security and stability of Algeria and the tranquility of its people are inseparable from the security and stability of Morocco, and vice versa: what affects Morocco will also affect Algeria, for the two countries are like one and the same body.

This is because Morocco and Algeria are both suffering from the problems of migration, smuggling, drugs and human trafficking.

It is the gangs which engage in such activities that are our real, common enemy. Should we work together to combat them, we would surely manage to reduce their activities and dry up their sources.

On the other hand, I regret the media and diplomatic tensions currently characterizing relations between Morocco and Algeria; not only are they detrimental to the image of both countries, but they also create a negative impression, especially in international forums.

I therefore call for making the logic of wisdom and of our supreme interests prevail in order to remedy this regrettable situation. This is a situation in which the energies of our two countries are being squandered and which is incompatible with the bonds of affection and fraternity between our peoples.

Morocco and Algeria are more than just two neighboring countries: they are twins, complementing one another.

For this reason, I call upon His Excellency the Algerian President for us to work together, as soon as he sees fit, so as to promote the fraternal relations built by our peoples through years of common struggle.

Dear Citizens,

I should like to take the opportunity of this glorious event to pay tribute to our Royal Armed Forces, the Royal Gendarmerie, the National Security Forces, the Auxiliary Forces and the Emergency Services for their dedication, and for their constant mobilization, under my leadership, to uphold the unity and sovereignty of the nation and preserve its security and stability.

With deep reverence, I also wish to honor the memory of our venerable ancestors for their sacrifices, particularly my revered grandfather and father, Their late Majesties King Mohammed V and King Hassan II - may they rest in peace - as well as the memory of the nation’s valiant martyrs.

God Almighty says: “If God finds any good in your hearts He will give you something better”.  True is the Word of God.

Wassalamu alaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh."
