"Morocco is taking an important step towards achieving gender equality" by adopting Law 19-20 and Law 5-96, UN Women pointed out in a statement.
By setting 30% as a progressive quota for women in three years, and then 40% in six years, "Morocco fulfills its commitments to implement the provisions of CEDAW [Editor's note: Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women], especially with regard to affirmative action," the statement added.
Draft Law 19-20 focuses on five main areas, including the consolidation of gender approach and, particularly, women's representation in the administrative and supervisory bodies.
It also provides that companies' articles of association must stipulate the obligation of moving towards gender balance in the composition of the Board of Directors (Article 39) and the Supervisory Board (Article 83).
Specifically, the draft law provides that as of January 1 of the third year following the publication of the text in the Official Bulletin, "the representation of each gender on the Board of Directors and Supervisory Board shall not be less than 30% in companies making public offerings."
