According to these figures, all the indicators related to road accidents declined in the month of April, the ministry said Monday in a press release.
Road accidents resulting in injuries totalled 2.165 (-72.33%), while the number of seriously injured people amounted to 171 (-71.64%), the source noted.
The main victims of road accidents are vulnerable road users (pedestrians and users of two and three wheels) who remain the most affected category, with a share of more than 81% of those killed, followed by users of passenger vehicles (12% of all those killed).
These three main categories of users, who account for approximately 93% of all those killed, have recorded large decreases, compared to April 2019: -48.08% for pedestrians, -43.24% for users of two and three wheels and -89.69% for users of light vehicles.
At the regional level, the Kingdom's twelve regions have recorded decreases in the number of accidents in April 2020 compared to April 2019, varying between 14.29% in the region of Dakhla-Oued Ed Dahab and 77.78% in the region of Marrakech-Safi, the source said.
Concerning the numbers of those killed, 10 regions out of 12 have reported decreases varying between 42.86% in the Daraa-Tafilalt region and 88.86% in Beni Mellal-Khenifra.
This significant drop in road accidents indicators in April 2020 is due to the implementation of coronavirus lockdown measures in Morocco, which started in March 20, 2020, and led to a large reduction in the mobility of people, the ministry explained.
