This operation was carried out, on the basis of information provided by the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), in a rural area west of Goulmima, in coordination with the services of the Royal Gendarmerie, National Police (DGSN) said in a statement.
The suspect (39 years old) was arrested while transporting the banned substance in a vehicle, the source pointed out, adding that the man refused to comply and tried to flee, endangering the lives of road users and policemen.
Faced with this situation, a police officer was forced to use his service weapon and fire warning bullets, which made it possible to arrest the suspect.
Searches led policemen to discover 2.5 tonnes of cannabis resin in the car and two cartridges for hunting rifles.
The operation also led to the seizure another vehicle abandoned by its driver, DGSN said, adding that policemen found 950 grams of cannabis resin in the car.
The suspect was wanted by the Royal Gendarmerie for alleged involvement in a case of intentional homicide.
He was placed on custody, while investigations are underway to determine the eventual local and international ramifications of this criminal network.
