Speaking at a webinar organized by the Israeli Embassy in Washington on the occasion of International Women's Day under the theme "The Middle East and the Abraham Accords", the Ambassador said she was"proud to represent a country in which the advancement of women's rights has always been a priority for HM the King and his ancestors, and where the Constitution enshrines equality between men and women".
In this regard, she gave the example of several great female figures who have marked the history of the Kingdom, including Fatima Al Fihri, who founded Al Qaraouiyine University in 859, and Her Royal Highness Lalla Aicha, who became the first woman ambassador of the Arab world when she represented Morocco in the United Kingdom in the 1960s.
Referring to the Abraham Accords, HM the King's ambassador said the recent resumption of relations between Israel and Morocco has ushered in "a new era of peace and prosperity".
"As our countries seek to deepen their partnerships across all sectors, the contribution of women must be encouraged," she stressed, noting that "these breakthroughs must be inclusive to ensure that they will last".
The diplomat said that Moroccan women in the public and private sectors are "fully involved" in the implementation of the USA-Morocco-Israel tripartite agreement, with regular exchanges with their Israeli counterparts for building new partnerships.
"For the Moroccan women who support this dynamic, it is not only about seizing political, social and economic opportunities. It also concerns honoring a common history and a shared identity by reconnecting with the thousands of Israeli women of Moroccan origin who share a language and so many cultural traditions", remarked Lalla Joumala Alaoui.
For his part, Israel's Ambassador to Washington, Gilad Erdan, said that "while the pandemic has had a devastating effect on all of us, especially women, the Abraham Accords, and the new peace that blew through the region, had the opposite effect."
"The Accords have fundamentally transformed the region; they are the source of new cooperation in the fields of business, culture, and research, and constitute a shining example of religious tolerance," he said.
This new "admirable" peace also highlighted the essential role of women in seeking peace and making it concrete, Erdan added.
"The involvement of women in the development of these accords and the creation of partnerships between our governments, and more importantly, between our peoples, contribute greatly to their success," the Israeli ambassador stressed.
Moderated by the Director of Press and Public Diplomacy at the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs of the United States Department of State, Lynn Roche, this webinar was marked by the participation of representatives of the diplomatic missions of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in Washington.
